Hitachi Embedded Workshop is a Windows-based integrated development environment (IDE) used for building and debugging firmware for Hitachi/Renesas microcontrollers. Often referred to as High-performance Embedded Workshop (HEW), it was widely used with families such as H8 and SuperH (SH), providing a unified workspace for editing code, managing projects, compiling, linking, and performing on-chip debugging.

Key capabilities include:

  • Integrated C/C++/assembly toolchains with project and build configuration management
  • On-chip debugging via supported emulators (breakpoints, watch windows, memory/register views)
  • Device simulation and trace support for selected targets
  • Project wizards and templates to accelerate setup

Note: Hitachi Embedded Workshop/HEW is considered a legacy tool and has largely been superseded by Renesas e2 studio and newer toolchains, though it remains relevant for maintaining existing projects on older devices.

Hitachi Embedded Workshop is developed by Hitachi Micro Systems Europe Ltd and Hitachi. The most popular versions of this product among our users are: 1.0, 1.1, 1.1 beta and 1.2. The names of program executable files are Hdi.exe, Hew.exe and Hew2.exe. Works with hws file type.
